I think some authors try make their book cover for both genders but doesn't work out that way. I think it really depends on the story an what its about. Like Twilight about a love story between a vampire, a human and a werewolf. Its more drawn to girls but guys can read it but might not really want to. That's why I made the cover more appealing to boys with the teeth and the blood rather someone holding a apple.
I think you're definitely right about the blood on the cover! Gross!
